AI essay checker

What the AI essay checker does

This app checks an essay against the writing habits shared across AI chat tools generally, rather than one specific model, and returns the flags rather than one blended score. It's built around the question you actually have before a deadline: does my own argument read like it came out of a chatbot, and where exactly.

It runs as a server tool. Whatever you paste goes to our AI server, gets scored against shared AI writing patterns, and the flagged result comes back to the page. You get 5 free checks in any rolling 24 hours, no account and no plan behind it. Each check reads up to about 2,000 words; longer essays go through best a section at a time.

Workflow

How to run the AI essay checker in three steps

Use it on a finished draft, right before you submit it, not on a rough outline.

1. Paste your essay
Drop in the full piece, introduction to conclusion. More text gives the check a clearer structure to read.
2. Run the check
The text goes to our AI server once, gets scored, and the flagged patterns land back on the page.
3. Read the flags, not a score
Each pattern ships with a plain reason. Use that to decide what, if anything, is worth rewriting.

The real tells

The AI writing patterns that show up inside an essay's argument

Most chat assistants converge on a similar band of habits, and those habits read oddly once they land inside a running argument.

A scene-setting opener
'In today's fast-paced world' or similar, broad enough to fit any topic, which is exactly why it reads as generated.
The negation pivot
'It's not just X, it's Y', a construction models reach for constantly and people rarely write twice on one page.
Weightless hedges
'It's important to note that' announcing a point instead of making it directly.
Formal connectors doing heavy lifting
Moreover, furthermore, additionally: correct English that reads stiffer than the argument actually needs.
A narrow, borrowed vocabulary
Delve, tapestry, realm, testament: fine alone, a signature once several appear together.
Suspiciously even sentence length
Every sentence roughly the same length, where a person's argument naturally lurches between short and long.

Argument checklist

What makes an essay argue, not just describe

The checker reads phrasing. Whether the essay actually argues something is a separate, equally important question.

Put the thesis up front
A reader should find your claim in the introduction, not have to reconstruct it from the conclusion.
One job per paragraph
Claim, evidence, analysis, link back to the thesis. A paragraph doing all four is doing its job.
Explain the evidence
A quote or source needs a sentence saying what it proves, not just a citation dropped beside it.
Address the obvious objection
A paragraph arguing only one side, with no counterargument acknowledged, reads thinner than it is.
Make the conclusion do work
Restating the introduction isn't a conclusion. Synthesise the paragraphs into a final point.

Straight answer

Can this tell me exactly which tool was used, or make my essay undetectable?

No to both, and this app isn't going to pretend otherwise. It reports patterns shared across chat tools generally, not the fingerprint of one specific assistant. It has no affiliation with Turnitin, GPTZero or Copyleaks, and can't tell you what any of them would return on the same essay.

Institutions write their own rules on AI assistance, and they differ between courses. Check yours before you submit anything. Use this app to see your own writing from the outside, not as a guarantee about what happens after you hand it in.

Why flags happen

Why false positives happen

Several kinds of legitimate essay writing trip the same flags, for reasons that have nothing to do with AI.

Second-language writers
Formal connectors and careful hedging are exactly what academic English courses teach, and get flagged for it.
Rigid house styles
A style guide that rewards formal transitions and even sentence rhythm reads similarly, for its own reasons.
Careful, well-organised essays
Clean structure required by a course is not evidence of anything on its own.
Heavily redrafted essays
A piece revised many times by a careful writer can end up more uniform in rhythm, which resembles a pattern flag.

If it happens to you

What to do if your own essay gets flagged

Evidence of process beats arguing with the tool.

Keep every draft
Outlines and earlier versions are the clearest proof an essay was built, not generated whole.
Leave version history on
Docs, Word and most platforms track this automatically. Don't switch it off while a question is open.
Be ready to explain your argument
Talking through why a paragraph sits where it does is hard to fake.
Ask what was actually flagged
A named pattern can be discussed. A bare score can't.

Who it's for

Who uses the AI essay checker, and when

Usually the writer, checking their own draft, at a few predictable moments.

Right before submission
A last look to catch anything that argues differently than you intended.
After talking an idea through with any chat assistant
Confirming the conversation didn't carry its phrasing into your final paragraphs.
Writing centres
Supporting a student's own review of their own draft, one input among several.
Second-language writers
Seeing which of their own habits read as pattern-heavy before a marker sees them.
FAQ

Everything answered. AI essay checker FAQ

How do I check an essay for AI writing patterns?

Paste it in and run the check. You'll get a list of flagged patterns, each with a reason, instead of a single number.

Is the AI essay checker free?

Yes. 5 checks in any rolling 24 hours, with no account and nothing to buy.

How many free checks do I get?

Five per rolling 24-hour window. It isn't a fixed daily reset, the window rolls forward from your last check.

Is my essay uploaded anywhere permanent?

It's sent to our AI server to be scored, that's the extent of its use. Not published, not shared, not needed again afterward.

Will this guarantee I pass a Turnitin or GPTZero check?

No. There's no affiliation with either, and no tool can predict what a third-party detector would report.

Can it tell me which specific AI tool was used?

No. It checks for patterns shared across chat tools generally. Model-specific checkers exist elsewhere on this site for that.

Does it check my thesis or argument?

No. It checks writing patterns only. The argument checklist above covers thesis, evidence and structure.

What's different about the assignment checker version?

Same shared patterns, different focus: this page looks at thesis and argument, the assignment page looks at brief compliance and structure.

How is this different from the ChatGPT or Gemini checker?

Those pages look for one model's specific habits. This page looks for patterns common across chat tools generally, useful when you don't know which tool was involved.

Can I check a rough outline?

You can, but a finished draft gives the check a fuller argument structure to weigh than a bullet-point outline.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The checker and its results both work fine in a phone browser.

Is there an API or bulk checking?

Not yet. Checks run one at a time, up to 5 per rolling 24 hours.

Why would my own writing get flagged?

Common causes: formal connectors and hedging taught in an academic writing course, a rigid house style, or unusually even sentence rhythm in an edited draft.

Does paraphrasing get past it?

Not reliably. Wording changes on the surface, but sentence rhythm and structure often carry over.

Does essay length matter?

Yes, at both ends: too little gives the check nothing to weigh, and each run caps out around 2,000 words, 12,000 characters. Past that, check it section by section, and each section spends one of your 5 checks for the day.

Does it work on essays in other languages?

The pattern set is tuned for English. Other languages may not trigger the same signals reliably.

Is this affiliated with any AI company?

No. It's an independent checker with no connection to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Meta, DeepSeek or Perplexity.

What happens after I use all 5 checks?

You wait for the rolling 24-hour window to free up allowance again. There's no paid tier to skip the wait.

Do I need to disclose AI help to my institution?

Follow whatever your institution's own policy says. This app can't make that decision for you, only your course can.
