ChatGPT text cleaner

What the ChatGPT text cleaner app does

This ChatGPT text cleaner app takes a reply copied out of ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or Perplexity and runs one pass over it that handles two problems most single-purpose tools split into two separate steps: the invisible Unicode characters a chat window's renderer leaves behind, and the doubled spaces and piled-up blank lines that come along with them. It is not scoped to one narrow character class the way a zero-width space remover is, and it does not strip every space in the text the way a full whitespace stripper does. It is the everyday pass for text about to be pasted into something that reads it literally rather than just displaying it.

Everything runs on your device. Paste, run it, copy the result. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and there is no cap on how much you clean or how often you are back.

Why it happens

Why a ChatGPT reply carries both problems at once

A reply reaches your clipboard as rendered rich text, not the plain characters shown on screen. The interface uses zero-width and non-printing characters to track formatting and cursor position during the render, and it often substitutes a non-breaking space for a plain one to hold indentation that ordinary HTML would otherwise collapse. Both of those survive the copy invisibly.

The spacing problem compounds when a reply mixes a numbered list, a quoted block and plain prose: each part can pick up its own spacing quirks, so one paste can carry doubled spaces in one paragraph, a run of blank lines between sections, and a non-breaking space or two, none of it visible until it breaks something downstream.

Workflow

How to clean ChatGPT text in three steps

Nothing to configure unless you want to.

Step 1
Paste the reply using ChatGPT's own copy button, not a manual selection.
Step 2
Leave Normalize spaces and Collapse blank lines switched on. Turn on Straighten quotes and dashes only if you also want curly quotes and dashes flattened.
Step 3
Press Clean text and copy the result.

The three options

What each of the app's three cleaning options does

Two run by default. The third changes visible punctuation, so it waits for you to switch it on.

Normalize spaces
On by default. Collapses a run of two or more spaces or tabs on a line down to one, and trims trailing whitespace at the end of each line. A single space between two words is never removed.
Collapse blank lines
On by default. Cuts a run of three or more blank lines down to one, so a chat export does not leave a wall of empty lines between short paragraphs.
Straighten quotes and dashes
Off by default. Converts curly quotes to straight ones and en and em dashes to a plain hyphen. It is opt-in because, unlike the other two, it changes characters a reader can see.

What it checks

The 14 hidden characters this app checks for

A dedicated cleaner catches what a manual find-and-replace misses, because several of these characters are not the one character a normal search is looking for.

Zero-width space, non-joiner, joiner and word joiner
Four characters that occupy a position in the text and render nothing: U+200B, U+200C, U+200D and U+2060. A joiner holding a multi-part emoji together is left in place.
No-break, narrow no-break and hair space
Three characters, U+00A0, U+202F and U+200A, that look exactly like a normal space on screen and are not underneath. The app swaps each one for a plain space rather than deleting it.
Soft hyphen and byte-order mark
U+00AD stays invisible until a line wraps and a hyphen appears where none was typed. U+FEFF is a byte-order mark that confuses a parser when it lands mid-document.
Bidirectional overrides
Five directional control characters, U+202A through U+202E, that can reorder how a string displays without changing any of the letters in it.

Why it matters

What an uncleaned ChatGPT reply actually breaks

A heading with a zero-width space in it stops matching its own slug, so on-page search quietly fails for a term that is clearly right there on the page. A non-breaking space pasted into a shell command or a YAML file produces an error nobody can see the cause of by reading the file.

Doubled spacing and stacked blank lines cause a quieter version of the same problem: a client deliverable or a team doc that reads unevenly, a CMS block that looks fine in the editor and odd once it renders, an EPUB or PDF export where the line breaks land in the wrong place. None of it looks like an invisible-character bug until you already know to check for one.

What this app skips

Why this app does not touch AI phrasing

This is a byte-level and spacing cleaner. It does not read the sentences it is cleaning, so it cannot tell you that an opener sounds generic or that a paragraph leans on the same handful of transitions. That is a separate job, done by the checker on the homepage, which scans for that phrasing and explains why each flagged sentence reads as machine-written.

Running this app first and the checker afterward, or the other way around, covers both halves of the problem. Running only this one covers the half that is invisible.

Who it's for

Who uses the ChatGPT text cleaner app, and when

Anyone about to paste a ChatGPT reply somewhere that reads it literally rather than just showing it on screen.

Content and marketing teams
Publishing AI-drafted copy into a CMS where a hidden character or a stray space would silently break a slug or search.
Engineers
Pasting a config value, a sample token or a snippet where a non-breaking space produces an error with no visible trace.
Client-facing teams
Sending a deliverable that should not read like an unedited export straight out of a chat window, spacing included.
Data teams
Feeding AI-generated text into JSON, CSV or a sitemap, where a hidden character or stray whitespace fails a strict parser.
FAQ

Everything answered. Everything people ask about the ChatGPT text cleaner app

How do I clean a ChatGPT reply?

Paste it in, leave the two default options on, and press Clean text. The cleaned result appears in the output box.

Is it free?

Yes. No signup, no trial, no usage limit, because the app runs on your own device.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Processing happens in your browser. Nothing is sent over the network.

Does it work with Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity too?

Yes. It targets characters and spacing, not the source, so a reply from any assistant is covered.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, in any modern mobile browser.

Is there a limit on how much text I can run through it?

No length cap and no run limit. Very large pastes depend on your device's memory rather than any restriction here.

What's the difference between this and the AI space remover?

The AI space remover deletes every space, joining every word together. This app only collapses doubled spaces and trims line ends, it never removes a single space between words.

What's the difference between this and the zero-width space remover?

The zero-width space remover targets four zero-width and joiner characters. This app removes all 14 the engine checks for and also normalizes spacing.

What's the difference between this and the watermark checker on the homepage?

The homepage checker scans and highlights hidden characters and flagged phrasing before you clean anything. This app skips straight to cleaning the characters and spacing, and does not flag phrasing at all.

Why is a single space still there after cleaning?

That's expected. Normalize spaces only collapses runs of two or more and trims line ends, it leaves normal single spaces between words alone.

Does cleaning change my wording?

No. Only characters and spacing are touched by default. Turning on Straighten quotes and dashes changes punctuation, never a word.

Does it flatten smart quotes and em dashes?

Only if you switch on Straighten quotes and dashes. It's off by default, so punctuation is left exactly as pasted unless you turn it on.

Are emoji safe?

Yes. A zero-width joiner holding a multi-part emoji together is detected and left in place.

Does it handle Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese and Korean replies?

Yes, letters are never touched. The zero-width non-joiner matters in Persian and some Indic scripts, so review those flags before cleaning that text.

Can I run AI-generated code through it?

Yes. Indentation and line breaks are preserved; only hidden characters and doubled spacing are removed.

Will cleaning make text pass an AI detector?

No app can promise that. Detectors weigh sentence patterns far more than invisible bytes or spacing.

Does finding hidden characters prove text is AI-written?

No. Document exports and CMS editors leave similar residue, so a hidden character is a formatting signal, not proof of who wrote something.

Is there a batch mode or an API?

Not yet. For several documents, paste, clean and copy each one for now.

Is it safe for confidential drafts?

Yes. Nothing is transmitted or retained by this app.

Does it clear a wall of blank lines left by a chat export?

Yes. With Collapse blank lines on, three or more blank lines in a row become one, so section breaks survive without the empty stretch.
