The job

What the ChatGPT essay checker does

You have a draft and you want to know what in it reads like ChatGPT before a marker reads it. Paste the essay into the ChatGPT essay checker and it comes back with the recognisable patterns flagged and a reason on each one. It is a list of edits to consider, not a judgement on the essay.

Nothing is rewritten for you here. The checker reads and reports; you decide which flags to act on and which are just how you write.

The workflow

How to run the ChatGPT essay checker in three steps

Three steps, one pass, and you are editing rather than guessing.

Step 1
Paste the whole draft, up to 12,000 characters. Include the introduction and conclusion, since that is where the strongest patterns sit.
Step 2
Run the check. The essay is sent to our server, a language model reads it, and the findings come back in a few seconds.
Step 3
Work down the flags. Fix the ones that are genuinely lazy writing and keep the ones that are your voice.

The checklist

The ChatGPT patterns to look for in an essay

These are the ones worth acting on first, because they are the ones a human marker notices before any software gets involved.

Stacked connectors
Moreover, furthermore and additionally opening consecutive paragraphs. Cut them and see whether the paragraph still follows. It usually does.
The hedge before the claim
"It is important to note that" in front of a sentence that was fine on its own. Delete the runway and the claim gets stronger.
Everything in threes
Three causes, three examples, three implications, chapter after chapter. Vary it, or cut to the two that actually have evidence.
The recap conclusion
A final paragraph that restates the essay. Replace it with the consequence of your argument, which is what a conclusion is for.
Nameless evidence
"Studies show" and "experts argue" with nothing attached. Add the name, the year and the finding, or drop the sentence.
Flat sentence length
Twenty-word sentences, one after another, for a page. A short one in the middle changes the rhythm immediately.

What you get back

Why the checker returns flags and not a score

Free essay detectors almost all hand back a percentage: eighty-something per cent AI, the rest original. It looks precise. It is not measured against anything you can inspect, and a student cannot take it into a meeting and defend it.

Flags are usable. A flag points at a sentence, names the pattern and gives a reason, which means you can either rewrite that sentence or decide the flag is wrong. That is an editing workflow. A score is just a mood.

Limits

How long an essay you can check

Each check takes between 1 and 12,000 characters, which is around 1,800 to 2,000 words of normal prose. Most single coursework essays fit in one go.

For a longer piece, split it deliberately rather than randomly. Check the introduction and first body section together, then the remaining sections, then the conclusion with the paragraph before it. Splitting mid-paragraph produces weaker findings because the checker loses the run-up.

Direct answer

Does this make an essay undetectable?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. We do not test this checker against Turnitin, GPTZero, Copyleaks, Originality.ai or anything else, we do not tune its findings to shift their scores, and we are not affiliated with any of them. Nobody outside those companies can tell you what their systems will report about a given essay.

The claim we do make is small and checkable: paste a draft, get the recognisable patterns pointed out, and the draft reads better after you fix them.

If it flags you

What to do if your own essay gets flagged

First, do not panic and do not rewrite the whole thing. The patterns are taught academic style, so a careful student following the guidance they were given will trip several of them honestly.

Keep the evidence
Drafts, version history, notes and outlines. A document with a visible history of edits is the strongest thing you have.
Read the actual flag
If it flagged three connectors and a recap paragraph, that is a style note. It is not a finding about you.
Ask what the accusation rests on
If it is a detector percentage, ask what it was calibrated against. That question rarely has a good answer.
Check the policy
Your institution's written rule on AI assistance is the thing that decides the case, not any tool's output.

Who it's for

Who runs an essay through this, and when

Students doing a last pass before submission, especially after using ChatGPT to outline or tighten a section and wanting to see what that left behind. Students who wrote the whole thing themselves and got told it reads generic, who want to know which sentences caused that.

Writing tutors who need a shared vocabulary for feedback. Pointing at a hollow recap paragraph is teachable; handing someone a percentage is not. One thing worth noticing: several of the free essay detectors that rank for this search sit on sites that sell essay writing and rewriting, so the page giving you a verdict is also selling the fix.

FAQ

Everything answered. Essay checker questions

How do I check an essay for ChatGPT's patterns?

Paste the draft into the box and run the check. Flags come back attached to the text, each with a short reason.

Is the ChatGPT essay checker free?

Yes, within the allowance: 5 free checks every rolling 24 hours, no account needed.

How long can the essay be?

Between 1 and 12,000 characters per check, roughly 1,800 to 2,000 words. Most coursework essays go in whole.

What if my essay is too long?

Split it at section breaks and run each part. Keep whole paragraphs together so the checker has enough run-up to judge rhythm.

Is my essay uploaded?

Yes. This check runs on our server, so the text is sent there. Do not paste anything you are not comfortable sending.

Why is there no AI percentage?

Because a percentage implies a measurement nobody is taking. Flags with reasons are something you can act on or dispute.

Will this guarantee I pass a Turnitin or GPTZero check?

No. We do not test against them, cannot predict their results, and have no affiliation with either.

Can it prove ChatGPT wrote my essay?

No. It reports patterns in the writing. No tool can observe who wrote a piece of text.

Why would my own writing get flagged?

Because hedging, connectors, three-part lists and summarising conclusions are all standard academic advice as well as ChatGPT habits.

Does it check my thesis or argument?

No. It reports writing patterns. A strong argument and a weak one can carry exactly the same patterns.

Does paraphrasing get past it?

Often not. Most of what gets flagged is structure, and swapping words leaves the structure where it was.

Can I check a rough outline?

You can, but expect thin results. Patterns like the recap conclusion and stacked connectors only appear once there is prose.

Does it work on essays in other languages?

You can paste one, but the patterns described are drawn from English academic prose, so treat other languages as less reliable.

How many free checks do I get?

Five per rolling 24 hours, counted from your first use rather than reset at midnight.

What happens after I use all 5 checks?

You get a message saying the allowance is spent. Checks free up as the earliest ones pass the 24-hour mark.

Is this affiliated with OpenAI?

No. ChatGPT is named to describe the writing patterns being checked, nothing more.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, the same in any modern mobile browser as on a desktop.

Is there an API or bulk checking?

Not currently. One essay at a time, pasted in by hand.

Do I need to disclose AI help to my institution?

Check their written policy, which is the only thing that settles it. Most institutions now publish one.

What is the difference between this and the humanizer?

The checker reports and changes nothing. The humanizer rewrites. Run the check first so you know what you are changing.
