The job

What the ChatGPT GPTZero checker does

You have a piece of writing and you know a detector is going to be pointed at it. This checker reads the draft and tells you which patterns in it are the recognisable ones, with a reason on each, so you are editing specific sentences instead of worrying in general.

We are not GPTZero and have no affiliation with them. This does not call their service, produce their score, or predict their verdict. It reports on your text, which is the only thing you control.

The workflow

How to check ChatGPT text before a detector does in three steps

Three steps, and you finish with an edit list rather than an anxiety.

Step 1
Paste the whole piece, up to 12,000 characters. Fragments give thin results because rhythm patterns need length to appear.
Step 2
Add an optional instruction of up to 300 characters if you want the check aimed at something specific.
Step 3
Work through the flags. Fix the ones that are genuinely lazy prose; keep the ones that are how you write.

Background

What GPTZero actually does in 2026

Worth knowing before you act on anything a detector says, because most explanations online describe a version that no longer exists.

The old method
Perplexity and burstiness: how predictable the words were, and how much that varied across sentences. This is what most articles still explain.
What changed
GPTZero's own site says it stopped using those measures in autumn 2023 and moved to a deep learning classifier, keeping them as one indicator among several.
What it returns now
A three-way result, human, AI or a mix, with sentence-level highlighting and a confidence score rather than a single perplexity number.
Who built it
Edward Tian at Princeton with Alex Cui and Yazan Mimi, launched January 2023.
Why it matters
If someone quotes a perplexity threshold at you as the reason your work was flagged, they are describing a retired method.

Direct answer

Can the app predict a GPTZero result?

No. We do not test against GPTZero, Turnitin, Copyleaks or Originality.ai, we do not tune findings to their scoring, and we are not affiliated with any of them. Their classifiers are proprietary and their thresholds are unpublished, so a prediction from outside would have nothing behind it.

Anyone offering you a guaranteed detector outcome is making a promise about software they do not operate. What is on offer here is smaller and true: the patterns in your draft, named, with reasons, in a few seconds.

Telling GPTZero apart from the lookalike sites

Searching for GPTZero returns several separate domains trading under the GPTZero or ZeroGPT name. They are different products from different operators, and a result from one is not a result from another.

Read the address bar
Before you trust a verdict, look at the domain you are actually on. The names differ by a suffix or a hyphen.
Ask which site
If you are shown a screenshot of a detector result, it is reasonable to ask which service produced it.
Treat scores as unsourced
A percentage from an unidentified site is not evidence, whatever number it shows.
Check the policy
Institutions that permit detector evidence usually name a specific service. A result from a different one falls outside it.

The record

Why real writing gets flagged as ChatGPT

The false positive problem is documented rather than anecdotal. A University of Maryland paper in March 2023 found several AI text detectors unreliable in practical use, and the Washington Post has reported that GPTZero suffers from false positives.

The reason is not mysterious. Detectors look for uniformity, predictability and formal structure, which is a description of good technical writing, taught essay structure and the careful prose of someone writing in a second language. Being flagged tells you your writing is regular. It does not tell anyone who wrote it.

If it happens

What to do if your work is wrongly flagged

Work the list rather than the argument. Evidence beats debate about how detectors work.

Produce the draft history
Version history in a word processor, dated notes, outlines, research tabs. A visible build is the strongest thing you have.
Identify the tool
Ask which service produced the result. Given the lookalike domains, this is a fair and often revealing question.
Read the policy
Most institutional policies are more cautious about detector output than the person quoting it to you.
Cite the record
Published criticism of detector reliability is checkable. Your opinion of the tool is not, so use the record.
Offer a live sample
Writing a comparable passage under observation is slow and awkward, and it settles things.

Who it's for

Who runs a GPTZero-style check, and when

Students before submission on a course where detectors are in use. Freelancers and agency writers whose clients have an AI policy in the contract and who would rather find the flat paragraphs themselves.

Teaching staff too, sometimes, who want to see what these signals consist of before deciding how much weight a detector result deserves. A list of named patterns is something you can discuss with a student. A percentage is something you can only accuse them with.

FAQ

Everything answered. GPTZero checker questions

Is this GPTZero?

No. We have no affiliation with GPTZero, do not call their service and do not reproduce their score.

How do I check my text for detector signals?

Paste the draft and run the check. Recognisable patterns come back flagged with a reason on each one.

Can it tell me my GPTZero score?

No. Their model is proprietary and their thresholds are unpublished, so nobody outside the company can predict a result.

Does GPTZero still use perplexity and burstiness?

Not as the main method. Their own site says they moved to a deep learning classifier in autumn 2023 and kept those as one indicator.

What does GPTZero return now?

A three-way classification of human, AI or mixed, with sentence-level highlighting and a confidence score.

Does this checker calculate perplexity?

No. It reports named patterns with explanations and prints no statistical score of any kind.

Is the checker free?

Yes, within the allowance: 5 free checks every rolling 24 hours, no account required.

How much text can I check at once?

Between 1 and 12,000 characters, which is roughly 1,800 to 2,000 words.

Is my text uploaded?

Yes. This check runs on our server, so the text is sent there to be analysed.

Are there sites pretending to be GPTZero?

The search results contain several distinct domains using the GPTZero or ZeroGPT name. Check the address bar before trusting a result.

Can a detector prove ChatGPT wrote something?

No. Detectors report signals, and published reporting documents false positives in the category including for GPTZero.

Why does my own writing get flagged?

Because uniform, formal, well-structured prose is exactly what these signals describe, whoever produced it.

Will editing lower a detector score?

We cannot tell you. We do not test against detectors and publish no advice aimed at moving their output.

How many checks do I get?

Five per rolling 24 hours, counted from your first use rather than resetting at midnight.

What happens when the allowance runs out?

The tool says so, and checks return as your earliest ones pass the 24-hour mark.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, identically in any modern mobile browser.

Is there an API or bulk checking?

Not currently. One piece of text at a time.

Is this affiliated with OpenAI?

No. Neither OpenAI nor GPTZero is affiliated with us; both names are used descriptively.

What is the difference between this and the humanizer?

This reports patterns and changes nothing. The humanizer rewrites text. Check first, then decide what to edit.

What should I do if I am accused?

Produce draft history, ask which service produced the result, and read your institution's written policy on detector evidence.
