Research paper checker

What the Grok research paper checker does

Paste a section of a paper and the app describes what it finds in the prose: uniform sentence shapes, connective phrasing typical of generated text, vocabulary held in a narrow band, claims asserted rather than evidenced. It is aimed at academic writing, and at drafts that went through Grok somewhere between the outline and the submission.

It runs on our server. Text goes up once, gets read, and the description comes back. 5 free checks in any rolling 24 hours, 1 to 12,000 characters per check, no account, nothing kept afterward.

What it does not do is hand you a number. There is no AI percentage here, because a percentage would imply a certainty about authorship that no tool has.

Where it fits

Where the checker belongs in a pre-submission workflow

Running a whole manuscript through one check and reading one result is the method that produces useless answers. Sections of a paper are written under different constraints and have to be read under different expectations.

Baseline first
Check a section you know you wrote unaided. Whatever it reports is your own writing's normal signal level.
Then the formulaic sections
Methods, ethics and funding statements will always read as regular. Expect that, and read the findings against the baseline rather than against zero.
Then the discursive sections
Introduction and discussion are where generated phrasing survives longest, because they are the parts a model drafts most fluently.
Revise for substance
Act on findings by adding particulars, not by rewording to move a result.
Keep the drafts
Dated versions and edit history are the only evidence of process that anyone will accept later.

How it works

How to check a research paper section in three steps

Three steps, and the second one changes the result more than people expect.

Step 1
Paste the prose of one section, up to 12,000 characters. Leave out page furniture, headers and the reference list.
Step 2
Use the instruction field to name the section, for example: this is a methods section for a randomised trial. A formulaic section should not be read like a discussion.
Step 3
Press Analyze, read the findings, and go back to the passages named. The output is a reading list, not a score.

The problem

Why real academic writing trips AI detectors

Detectors measure predictability. How surprising is each word given the last few, how much does sentence length vary, how wide is the vocabulary, how regular is the rhythm. That is a measurement of the finished text, not of how it came to exist.

Academic prose is supposed to be predictable, and the places where it is most predictable are the places it is most prescribed.

Methods sections
Standard procedures described in standard terms, which is the correct way to write them.
Ethics and funding statements
Institutional boilerplate that nobody is free to rephrase creatively.
Reporting guidelines
CONSORT, PRISMA and similar frameworks prescribe phrasing, and prescribed phrasing is regular by definition.
Second-language writing
Simpler syntax and a deliberately narrower vocabulary lower the very measures detectors read as suspicious.
Heavily proofread text
Good copy-editing makes sentences more regular, which pushes a draft toward the profile detectors flag.

What to act on

What to change after a flag, and what to leave alone

The instinct to reword until the result changes is the wrong instinct, and in an academic setting it is the risky one. The edits worth making all move the text toward being more specific rather than less regular.

Add
Instrument names, versions, sample sizes, dates, actual numbers. Generated prose is general because it has nothing particular to report.
Cut
Moreover, furthermore and additionally opening consecutive sentences, which is the single most recognisable generated rhythm.
Vary
Sentence length across a paragraph. Regularity reads as machine-written even when every sentence is correct.
Replace
Statements that something plays a crucial role with a statement of what it actually does.
Leave
Your methods section alone. It is supposed to read like that, and rewriting it for a detector makes the paper worse.

Journal policy

Do I need to disclose Grok use in a submission?

If the model contributed to the substance of the work, almost certainly yes. If it corrected grammar and spelling, usually not. The line falls in different places at different publishers, so the guidance that binds you is your target journal's own.

Two published examples give a sense of the shape. Elsevier asks for a Declaration of Generative AI statement. Springer Nature asks that the use be documented in the methods section. Both are revised periodically, so read the current author instructions rather than a summary of them.

Straight answer

Will this get my paper past a detector?

No, and it is not built to try. We have no affiliation with Turnitin, Copyleaks, GPTZero, Originality.ai or any journal's screening system, and no tool can predict what any of them will report.

Treat humanizer tools with real caution here. Rewriting a passage to change a result, rather than to make it more accurate, is close to the definition of the behaviour academic misconduct policies exist to address.

Who uses it

Who uses the research paper checker, and when

The same tool, reached from several different anxieties.

Authors before submission
A final pass over the introduction and discussion, where drafted phrasing lingers longest.
Doctoral students
Checking a chapter written in a second language to see what will be objected to, and why it is not their fault.
Supervisors
Opening a conversation about a draft with specifics rather than with a number and an accusation.
Journal editors
Screening a section without treating a signal as a finding.
Writing centre tutors
Teaching the habits that read as generated, which a percentage score cannot demonstrate.
FAQ

Everything answered. Questions about the Grok research paper checker

How do I check a paper written with Grok?

Paste one section of prose at a time, name the section in the instruction field, and press Analyze.

Is it free?

Yes. 5 free checks in any rolling 24 hours, no account needed.

Does it return an AI score?

No. It describes the signals it finds. A percentage would imply certainty about authorship that no detector actually has.

Is my unpublished manuscript safe?

The pasted text is sent to our server to be read once and is not kept afterward. It is not used to train anything.

Can I upload a PDF or a Word file?

No. Paste text only, up to 12,000 characters per run.

Why check section by section?

Because sections are written under different rules. A methods section and a discussion should not be judged by the same expectations.

Why is my methods section always flagged?

It is formulaic on purpose, and formulaic writing is exactly the pattern detectors read as generated.

Does writing in a second language make flags more likely?

Reported false-positive rates are higher for non-native English writing, because simpler syntax lowers the predictability measures detectors use.

Does a flag prove misconduct?

No. Publication ethics guidance is explicit that human-written text can be flagged, so a flag is a prompt for a human to look, nothing more.

Do journals run AI detectors on submissions?

Many do, generally as a screen that triggers human review rather than an automatic rejection. Policies vary by publisher.

Do I have to disclose using Grok?

Substantive help generally has to be disclosed; grammar and spelling help generally does not. Follow the journal's current author guidance.

What does Elsevier ask for?

A Declaration of Generative AI statement. Confirm the current wording in their author instructions.

What does Springer Nature ask for?

Documentation of the use in the methods section. Check their current guidance before relying on this.

Will it help me pass Turnitin?

No. We have no relationship with Turnitin and make no prediction about what it will report.

Should I run the paper through a humanizer?

In academic work, no. Rewriting to shift a score rather than to improve accuracy is what misconduct rules address.

Does it check plagiarism?

No. There is no source matching. It reads how the prose is written, not where it came from.

Does it mark up individual sentences?

No. The findings come back as text in the result pane.

How accurate is it?

No accuracy figure is published here, because we have run no benchmark and will not quote someone else's.

Does it work on papers drafted with other models?

The signals are general to generated prose. This page is framed around Grok, and the app has separate checkers for other models.

Is there an API or batch mode?

Not at present. One section per run, up to 5 in a rolling 24 hours.

What happens when the allowance runs out?

Checks pause until the rolling 24-hour window frees them again.

Is this affiliated with xAI?

No affiliation with xAI, and no endorsement from it.
