Resume builder

What the Grok resume builder does

Describe the posting and your actual history and the app writes resume text back: summary, experience bullets, a skills line, whatever the brief asks for. The output arrives as plain text in the result pane with a Copy button.

There is no template gallery, no drag-and-drop layout and no download. You take the words and put them into your own document, which means every layout decision an applicant tracking system will later react to stays in your hands.

It runs on our server. The brief goes up, text comes back. 5 free builds in any rolling 24 hours, up to 12,000 characters of brief, no account, nothing retained.

Where it fits

Where a text generator fits in an application workflow

The common mistake is building one resume and sending it everywhere. A text generator is a poor tool for that and an excellent tool for the opposite, which is rebuilding the wording against each posting while the structure and the facts stay fixed.

Keep a master file
Every employer, title, date and achievement you have, with numbers. This is the source of truth and it never goes away.
Build per posting
Paste the posting plus the relevant slice of your master file. The terminology changes per application; the facts do not.
Check every claim
Read the generated lines against the master file. Anything the brief did not contain has no business in the result.
Paste into your document
One column, standard headings, standard bullets. This is the step where parseability is actually decided.
Run the plain-text test
Save as plain text, reopen and read. Anything that vanished is likely invisible to a parser as well.

How it works

How to build a resume with Grok in three steps

Three steps, and the brief is where nearly all the quality comes from.

Step 1
Write the brief: the posting's own wording, then your employers, titles, dates and what you actually achieved, with figures where you have them.
Step 2
Use the instruction field to specify the output, for example: five bullets for the current role only, past tense, one metric per bullet.
Step 3
Press Generate, read every line against the truth, then copy it into your own single-column document.

The mechanism

What an applicant tracking system does with your resume

Three stages, in order: parse the file into segments, categorise those segments into fields such as employer, title and dates, then index the result so a recruiter can search it. Standard section headings matter because the parser uses them to work out what it is looking at.

Almost all the damage happens in the first stage, and it is caused by formatting the software cannot read rather than by any judgement about your experience.

Headers and footers
Contact details placed there are often not extracted, which is how a resume arrives with no way to reply to it.
Two-column layouts
A parser reads top to bottom, left to right, so two columns interleave into one unusable stream.
Tables and text boxes
Text inside them is frequently skipped entirely, taking a whole skills or education section with it.
Graphics and skill bars
A rating rendered as a bar carries no text at all, so it contributes nothing to the index.
Image-only PDFs
No text layer means nothing to parse. Export with selectable text, or use .docx.

What to write

What makes a resume bullet worth keeping

The single biggest difference between resume text that works and resume text that does not is whether a bullet reports a duty or a result. The app can shape the sentence, but only your brief can supply the result.

Cut onboarding time by 30 percent is a bullet. Responsible for onboarding is a job description. If the brief contains only the second kind, the output will too, because there is nothing there to convert.

Lead with the outcome
What changed, by how much, over what period. The verb comes second.
Mirror the posting
Use the employer's own term for the thing, since a keyword search matches terms rather than synonyms.
Spell out acronyms once
Include both forms so either spelling is findable in an index.
Attach evidence to skills
A skill listed in a skills section and demonstrated in a bullet reads as real. One that appears only in a list does not.
Keep the order chronological
Most recent first, with dates, so the categorisation stage gets the sequence it expects.

Straight answer

Will an AI-built resume get filtered out?

Not by a parser, which reads structure rather than style. By a human, possibly, and the reason is vagueness rather than technology. Generated resume text drifts toward duties, hype adjectives and sentences that would fit anybody in the role, and an experienced reader spots that pattern fast.

Specificity is the whole answer. Numbers, tools, scale and consequences make a resume read as yours, because generic text has no particulars available to it.

We will not claim this gets you through any tracking system. We never see the system, the posting or the file you finally send.

Who uses it

Who uses the Grok resume builder, and when

The tool suits some points in a search better than others.

High-volume applicants
Rebuilding the wording per posting instead of sending one file to twenty employers.
Career changers
Restating the same history in another industry's vocabulary, which is mostly translation.
People with a designed resume
Rebuilding it as plain text to find out what a parser would actually have extracted from the pretty version.
First-time applicants
Getting a structure to react to, which is easier than inventing one from an empty page.
Returners after a gap
Producing a first draft quickly, then correcting it into something accurate and defensible.
FAQ

Everything answered. Questions about the Grok resume builder

How do I build a resume with Grok?

Paste the posting and your real history into the brief, say what output you want, and press Generate.

Is it free?

Yes. 5 free builds in any rolling 24 hours, no account required.

Can I download a PDF or DOCX?

No. You copy the text out and save it in your own document, in whatever format you need.

Are there resume templates?

No. There is no design or layout step on this route, only the text.

Can I upload my current resume?

No. Paste its text into the brief instead, along with the posting.

Is there a match score against the job description?

No. We never see the document or the system reading it, so any score would be made up.

How long can the brief be?

Between 1 and 12,000 characters, which comfortably fits a posting plus your history.

Is my brief stored?

No. It is sent to our server to generate the text and is not kept after the result returns.

What breaks ATS parsing?

Headers and footers, tables, columns, text boxes, graphics, custom bullet symbols and PDFs with no text layer.

What file format should I send?

Published guidance points to .docx or a text-based PDF, meaning one with selectable text rather than an image.

How do I test that my resume parses?

Save it as plain text and reopen it. Whatever disappeared is probably invisible to a parser too.

Why do standard section headings matter?

The parser uses them to work out what each block of text is, so a catchy heading can leave a whole section uncategorised.

Will it make up experience I do not have?

It writes from your brief, so give it facts and read every line. Once you send it, the claims are yours.

Can a recruiter tell it was written with AI?

What gives it away is vagueness. Bullets with numbers, tools and outcomes do not read as generated.

Should I tailor per application?

Yes. Matching the posting's own terminology is most of what tailoring achieves, and it takes one run.

Does it write cover letters?

This page builds resume text. Ask it for a resume and that is what it writes.

What order should the experience be in?

Reverse chronological with dates, which is the order the categorisation stage expects.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Write the brief, generate and copy in a mobile browser.

Is there an API or batch mode?

Not at present. One build per run, up to 5 in a rolling 24 hours.

What happens when the builds run out?

The tool pauses until the rolling 24-hour window frees the allowance.

Is this affiliated with xAI?

No affiliation with xAI, and no endorsement from it.
