Perplexity essay checker

What the Perplexity essay checker does

The Perplexity essay checker reads a draft for the signals of writing that was retrieved and summarised rather than argued, and names each one so you can go and look. It is the step between finishing a draft and handing it in.

It runs on our AI server: 5 free checks every rolling 24 hours, no account, 1 to 12,000 characters per check, which is roughly a 2,000-word essay. Your text is not stored. A hashed identifier counts your runs and that is all that stays behind.

The workflow

The three checks an essay needs, in order

Most people run one check and assume they ran all of them. These are separate jobs with separate methods, and doing them in this order saves rework.

1. Sources
Open every citation and confirm the page says what you cited it for. This is first because it is the one that costs marks regardless of anything else.
2. Writing signals
This tool. It reads for citation residue, missing thesis, attribution instead of argument, and flat structure.
3. Grammar and clarity
A different tool entirely. We do not do this one and it is worth doing last, after the structure has stopped moving.
Not in scope: plagiarism
This checker has no database, no index and no internet access at run time, so it cannot tell you whether a sentence exists elsewhere.

How it works

How to check a Perplexity essay in three steps

Paste, analyze, then work the findings.

Step 1
Paste a whole section rather than a paragraph. Structure is part of what is being read, so a fragment gives a thinner result.
Step 2
Press Analyze. One round trip to our AI server and the findings come back.
Step 3
Work down the list, decide which findings you agree with, and fix those. Disagreeing is allowed; it is your argument.

The signals

What to look for in a Perplexity-drafted essay

If you would rather scan by hand, this is the order that finds the most in the least time.

Search for "["
A bracketed numeral mid-sentence is citation residue from the answer format. It takes one keystroke to find and is the clearest single item.
Find the thesis
If you cannot point at the sentence that states your claim, you have a literature review. That is what a retrieval engine produces by default.
Count the attributions
"According to" and "researchers suggest" repeated through a paragraph means the argument is being outsourced.
Check the last line
A caveat about information possibly being out of date belongs to a search engine and not to an essay.
Look at the paragraph lengths
All within a few lines of each other usually means every section got equal weight, which an argument rarely wants.

Do this first

Why Perplexity citations come before the writing check

A retrieval engine cites the page it retrieved. Whether that page supports the sentence attached to it is a separate question, and it is the one your marker will ask. A reference that does not say what it is cited for is a referencing failure on its own terms.

So open each source, read enough to confirm the claim, and put the citation into your own required format. This checker reads only the text you paste. It cannot follow a link and it does not know whether your sources exist.

The honest limit

Why a clean essay still gets flagged

Academic prose is conventional on purpose: signposted paragraphs, hedged claims, a neutral register. Those conventions are also what generated text produces, so careful writing gets flagged and the flag says nothing about who wrote it.

The effect is strongest on writers working in a second language, whose prose tends to stay closer to the model form. That is why the output here is a list of findings instead of a number. You can take a finding back to the paragraph and disagree with it.

Straight answer

Can an essay checker prove who wrote something?

No. It reports signals, never proof of authorship, and it is not suitable as evidence in an academic integrity case. A flag is the beginning of a conversation.

We have no affiliation with Perplexity AI, Turnitin, GPTZero, Copyleaks or Originality.ai, and we do not predict what any of them would report about your work.

In practice

When to run the Perplexity essay checker

After the sources are verified and before the grammar pass, when the structure can still change cheaply. That is the only point in the process where the findings are actionable rather than annoying.

Also useful as an argument test on any draft. If the check cannot find your thesis, a reader working through it at speed probably will not either.

FAQ

Everything answered. Perplexity essay checker FAQ

How do I check my essay for Perplexity-style writing?

Paste a full section above and press Analyze. The findings name each signal so you can take it back to the draft.

Is it free?

Yes. 5 free checks every rolling 24 hours, no account needed.

Do you store my essay?

No. It is sent for the check and returned. Only a hashed identifier is kept, to count runs.

Does it check grammar?

No. That is a separate check with a separate method. Run it last, with a grammar tool.

Does it check plagiarism?

No. There is no database and no internet access at run time, so it cannot compare your text to anything.

In what order should I run my checks?

Sources first, then this writing check, then grammar. Fixing structure after a grammar pass wastes the grammar pass.

Can it prove my essay was written by AI?

No. It reports signals only, and those are not evidence of authorship.

Why was my own writing flagged?

Because academic conventions and generated prose look alike. A flag is about the pattern in front of it.

Is it unfair to second-language writers?

The underlying problem affects every approach to detection, which is exactly why this returns findings you can contest rather than a score.

How much text can I check?

1 to 12,000 characters per check, about 2,000 words. Split a longer essay into sections.

How many checks do I get?

5 per rolling 24 hours, each allowance returning 24 hours after use.

Do I still need to check my citations?

Yes, first. Perplexity cites pages it retrieved, which is not the same as pages that support your sentence.

Can the checker open my sources?

No. It reads the pasted text and cannot follow a link.

Will it tell me my Turnitin result?

No. Nobody outside Turnitin can, and we make no prediction.

Does it return a percentage?

No. Named findings only, because a finding can be checked and a percentage cannot.

What should I fix first in the findings?

Citation residue, then the missing thesis. One is a fact, the other is what costs marks.

Is using Perplexity for research allowed?

Your institution decides that. Ask, and disclose what you used.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, in any modern mobile browser.

Does it work in other languages?

English is what it is tested for. Other languages may work with less reliable findings.

Is there a batch mode or API?

Not currently. One check at a time.

Is there a paid tier?

No. The daily allowance is the whole offer.

How does this differ from the Perplexity watermark detector?

That one scans for hidden Unicode characters in your browser. This one reads writing signals on our server.
