Whitespace minifier
What the whitespace minifier does
This app scans your text for any run of whitespace, two or more spaces together, a tab, a mix of spaces and tabs, or whitespace that spans a line break, and collapses each one down to exactly one regular space. It trims the leading and trailing ends of the result too, so what comes out has clean, even spacing throughout.
It's local. The whole thing runs in your browser, nothing you paste is uploaded, and there's no cap on how much you minify or how often you're back.
It's a small operation, but it's the kind of small operation that's genuinely annoying to trust to a server round trip. There's no reason fixing a run of extra spaces should ever need to leave your device.
Workflow
How to minify whitespace in three steps
Nothing to configure.
- Step 1
- Paste text with uneven spacing into the box.
- Step 2
- Press Minify. It runs instantly, on your device.
- Step 3
- Copy the evenly spaced result.
The key distinction
Collapsing runs to one space, not deleting every space
There's a real difference between minifying whitespace and removing it outright, and it's worth being precise about which one you actually need. This app reduces any run of one or more whitespace characters to exactly one space; it never touches the single space that's supposed to sit between two words. What comes out reads as normal prose, just with tidy, consistent spacing instead of ragged gaps.
If the goal is a string with no spaces at all, for a slug, a key or a field that rejects whitespace outright, that's a different tool's job entirely. Use the text space remover for that, since it deletes every space rather than collapsing runs of them.
Worth knowing
This also collapses whitespace that spans a line break
A run of whitespace can include a line break along with any spaces or tabs sitting next to it, so minifying a multi-paragraph document joins those paragraphs onto a single line too: the tool has no way to tell 'whitespace that happens to be a paragraph break' apart from 'whitespace that's just a few extra spaces'. If keeping paragraphs separate is the point, process each one on its own, or use the line break remover and put your own paragraph breaks back afterward.
For text that's already a single block with just erratic internal spacing, none of that applies: the outcome is exactly what you want, uneven gaps becoming one consistent space all the way through.
Where the mess comes from
Why text ends up with uneven spacing in the first place
Copying out of a table, a PDF or certain rich-text editors often drags along the source's column alignment as literal repeated spaces, since the layout was visual spacing rather than real structure. Text built programmatically from several pieces, a template with unfilled placeholders, a string built by concatenating fragments, commonly ends up with doubled spaces exactly where two pieces meet.
Manual edits add their own drift over time too: a small inconsistency here, a tab where someone else used spaces there, an extra space left behind after deleting a word.
Why it matters
What uneven whitespace actually breaks
A reader barely notices an extra space inside a sentence, but software does. A string comparison expecting single-spaced text fails against a double-spaced variant of the same words. A search index can treat 'word word' as a different phrase from 'word word' entirely. Minified HTML, CSS and JSON depend on collapsed whitespace to be genuinely smaller in file size, not just tidier on screen.
In data exports, inconsistent spacing between fields is a frequent, quiet cause of a lookup or a join failing to match rows that are otherwise identical.
Who it's for
Who uses a whitespace minifier, and when
Writers cleaning up text pulled from a table or a PDF, where the original column layout left runs of spaces sitting mid-sentence. Developers tidying a config value, a log line or a data field where consistent single spacing matters for a comparison further down the line.
Anyone prepping text for a system that would treat a double space as meaningfully different from a single one reaches for this as a normalization pass before that text moves anywhere else.
